Historic Ivy Cliff
Preserving an historic property
Originally a smaller building, the western "pen" was completed in the 1810's. By the 1830's the eastern "pen" was added along with the connecting breezeway. This addition formed the unusual "dogtrot" style building that stands today. Unique stonework completes the foundation and chimneys on both the west and east. This cabin could have housed four families, two on the upper level and two on the lower level.
Ivy Cliff, a Virginia not-for-profit 501(c)(3), is currently working on the following:
-
Working with archeologists to locate and excavate other possible slave dwellings on the property
-
Finding historical architects to attempt to preserve the standing slave dwelling.
-
Researching the names and history of enslaved at Ivy Cliff.
